The Greater Philadelphia Healthy Marriage Coalition (GPHMC)
Education Empowerment Excellence
GPHMC Annual Meeting at Cedarbrook Country Club - January 4, 2008The Coalition is an association of faith communities, agencies, organizations, and individuals in the Greater Philadelphia area who collaborate to promote the vision and mission of the Greater Philadelphia Healthy Marriage Coalition (GPHMC). The Coalition is committed to building a capacity of faith-based service delivery systems in the Greater Philadelphia area and to providing a forum for communication, cooperation, coordination, and collaboration among agencies, organizations and individuals who support the mission of the Coalition to create broad-based community support for healthy marriages and families throughout the Delaware Valley.

The Steering Committee of the GPHMC

  • We share a common desire to help families and enhance the strengths of marriage.
  • We have a common concern for the value of the institution of marriage and we respect cultural traditions of our diverse metropolitan community.
  • We pledge to create a healthy coalition that includes exchanging information, collaboration, inclusion of faith-based/community based service delivery systems, and create multiple strategies that will attract people to participate in our coalition.

Our Vision for the Greater Philadelphia Area

An educated public who are aware of the importance of healthy marriages and have access to knowledge, skills, and support to strengthen and enhance family life.

Our Mission

We believe that every person is entitled to experience loving, enduring, and safe relationships and that it is our community’s responsibility to foster healthy marriages that are the foundation for stable, secure family life for both parents and children, resting on the foundation of a healthy marriage.

We recognize that marriage and family life are social structures embedded in a pluralistic culture. As a social institution, marriage in the United States has been effected by historical, social, and economic forces. Fragile marriages and families result from the intergenerational transmission of discrimination and disadvantages.

To strengthen marriage and family bonds from the cradle to the grave, a community-based, collaborative, and coordinated effort is needed to inform and support the public. This initiative aims to provide individuals from adolescence through maturity the skills and attitudes proven necessary to sustain and enhance stable, secure and satisfying relationships.

The Greater Philadelphia Healthy Marriage Coalition works to provide effective and proven multi-intervention strategies that promote, support, strengthen and enhance marriages, creating a legacy of safe, secure and satisfying family relationships for this and future generations in the Delaware Valley.

Our Goals

  • Increase the number of children being raised by their own two parents
  • Increase father involvement in the lives of children
  • Increase the number of couples receiving premarital education
  • Decrease the divorce rate
  • Decrease family violence

Our Strategies to Achieve Our Goals

  • Promote public awareness of the benefits of relationship, premarital and marriage education
  • Develop a model for community support of healthy marriage
  • Outreach to faith-based/community-based organization to provide them with information, training, and support to develop comprehensive marriage and family education programs within their communities
  • Implement Community Marriage Policies throughout the Greater Philadelphia area
  • Coordinate, collaborate and mobilize resources with service providers that support the mission of the GPHMC, with particular attention to those who are underserved and those who are not served.
